St. Valentines Day is celebrated on Feburary the fourteenth. It is the traditional day that lovers express their love to each other, sending Valentines cards or candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentines Day. The holiday is named after two men, both Christian Martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines".
On the acient Athens calendar, the period between mid-January to mid-Feburary was the month of Gamelion, dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera.
On St. Valentines Day in 1349, roughly 2000 Jews were burned to death by Christian mobs in Strausbourg. These mobs, led by nobles who owned large sums to Jewish money-lenders(usurs), blaming the Jews for poisiong the cits wells and causing the bubonic plague.
The earliest surviving valentine dates from 1415.
